British Columbia rewards heat-pump companies that pick their climate zone first. On the coast, heat pumps sell on comfort, cooling during hotter summers and moving off gas. In the Interior and the North, the conversation is about cold-weather performance and backup heat. We help BC HVAC owners decide which version of the market to enter, and in which order. We advise; we do not install.
The BC heat-pump market and its buyers
BC homes heat with a mix of fuels. According to Statistics Canada, natural gas was the primary heating energy for 42% of BC households in 2023, with electricity close behind at 36%. That split shapes the offer.
- Gas-heated detached homes in Metro Vancouver suburbs, the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan are the obvious market for ducted heat pumps and dual-fuel add-ons.
- Electrically heated homes and suites with baseboards are natural ductless candidates, especially older houses and basement suites.
- Condos and townhouses bring strata approvals into the sale, which lengthens the cycle and suits companies willing to learn that process.
For a new entrant, Metro Vancouver is crowded with established installers. Smaller Interior and Island markets can offer an easier start if your crew can cover the distance.
Climate and what it means for your offer
The southwest coast has mild, wet winters, while the Interior and the North have colder, longer heating seasons. For the coast, comfort, humidity and summer cooling carry as much weight as winter performance, so messaging should not be only about heating. In colder zones, homeowners will ask what happens in a deep cold snap, and your offer needs a clear backup heat answer: dual fuel, electric backup, or a properly sized cold-climate system.
Plan seasons accordingly. Coastal demand often rises with the first summer heat, while Interior demand tends to follow heating-bill season and program announcements.
Programs to watch, as of October 2026
- CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program. The official program page lists income-based heat-pump rebates of up to $13,000 for ground-oriented homes and up to $5,000 for electrically heated condo and apartment units, and states that upgrades must be installed by a program-registered contractor. The page also noted it was not being updated during the provincial election period, so confirm current terms with the program.
- Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program in BC. A federal backgrounder dated June 29, 2026 describes delivery through BC Hydro, with weatherization and heat pumps for about 6,000 lower-income households, and FortisBC, with dual-fuel systems and other measures for about 1,000 households.
Always confirm with the administrator before quoting a program.
Regulators and credentials to know
We link these and do not interpret them; your licensing advice should come from the regulators themselves.
- Technical Safety BC oversees gas and electrical safety and licenses gas and electrical contractors.
- SkilledTradesBC administers Skilled Trades Certification, which covers refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic, gasfitter (Class A and B) and sheet metal worker, among others.
- WorkSafeBC is the workers' compensation and workplace safety board.
How we would approach a BC entry
For a typical gas-focused BC company, our starting hypothesis would be:
- Pick one climate zone. Coastal comfort and cooling, or Interior cold-weather performance, not both in the first year.
- Register for the Energy Savings Program before advertising it, if income-qualified customers are a meaningful share of your area.
- Lead with one ducted offer and one ductless offer, or with dual fuel in colder, gas-served towns.
- Build town-specific pages that explain your offer and link to the program, without promising eligibility.
Our BC results include GasBoilers.ca, a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat across 26+ BC communities, which is a useful model for launching a new line under an existing brand. See the results page, the market assessment, and the program registration service.
Frequently asked questions
Do BC heat-pump rebates require a registered contractor?
For the Energy Savings Program, yes. As of October 2026 its official page states that upgrades must be installed by a contractor registered with that program to qualify. Confirm current rules with Better Homes BC before quoting.
Should a Kelowna or Prince George company lead with dual fuel?
It is often the easier first offer in colder parts of BC where natural gas is available, because the furnace stays as backup. The right choice depends on your local programs, housing and customers.
Which trades matter for heat-pump crews in BC?
SkilledTradesBC lists refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic, gasfitter Class A and B and sheet metal worker among the trades under Skilled Trades Certification. Check SkilledTradesBC for the exact requirements.
